DAO ethnic minority in Vietnam – Jungle people

Dao is a rather large group of ethnic in Vietnam which can be seen in northern Vietnam. The history of this minority is not fully known that we only know they could originated from China and immigrated to Vietnam between the 12th or 13th century and the early 20th century.

Religion of Dao people contains many elements ranging from Confucianism, Buddhism to Taoism and they sacred Ban Vuong who was the legendary holy man and the oldest ancestor of the Dao minority group. The Dao ethnic group is divided into some subgroups such as Dao with white trousers, Dao with narrow trousers, Dao with coins, Dao with blue clothes…

Triangular red turban decorated with silver coins and red tassels is the most outstanding thing identifying a Dao woman. The most common clothes of Dao men are long pants and a shirt and a scarf on head.

The man in Dao’s society is the person hold most of the power and normally is the economic factor while women usually stay at home taking care of children and doing housework. It is extremely important for Dao people to choose the place where their family will live and the purpose of this choice is to find a place where can bring them the richness representing by the number of cows, buffaloes, money and property. Customarily, Dao people will put a full bowl of rice on the place the stay.

VIETNAMESE BANH CUON

It is probaly that you heard of Banh Mi as an internationally famous food of Vietnam but do you know Banh Cuon?

Banh Cuon is favorite breakfast of Vietnamese people that made from a thin, wide sheet of steamed rice. The cake is batter filled with a mixture of cooked seasoned ground pork, ear mushroom, and minced shallots.

The dish is usually served with Cha lua (port sausage) dipped in to fish sauce and eaten with some herbs. Making Banh Cuon sauce is such an art and the sauce makers are great artists.  The sauce is a perfect mix of fish sauce, water, sugar, chilly, lime juice, seasoning powder and sometimes, a drop of Ca Cuong as a secret ingredient.
